Incontinence can be defined as the loss of muscle control over bladder or bowel or both resulting in involuntary urination or defecation. Bowel incontinence affects more women than men especially those above 65. This condition occurs due to loss of bowel control leading to involuntary leakage of small amounts of stool due to exertion or passing of gas.
The causes for this condition are weak anus and intestine muscles, chronic constipation, excess use of laxatives, injury to anal muscles during child birth, emotional problems and severe diarrhea.
Urinary incontinence is the loss of bladder control resulting in involuntary urine leakage causing embarrassment and shame. It is often a temporary phenomenon affecting more women than men and can affect anybody any time.
The symptoms can vary from mild leakage of urine to heavy wetting. It can be controlled and managed or can be eliminated completely if the underlying cause is removed.
The causes of urinary incontinence can be varied. This condition affects more women because the pelvic muscles are strained and become weak due to pregnancy or child birth. The hormonal changes during menopause may also be the cause. It can also happen due to prostate issues or the side effects of prostate surgery.
Other factors include urinary tract infections, diabetes , medications, nervous disorders, multiple sclerosis and spinal chord damage.
There are five types of urinary incontinence namely urge incontinence, stress incontinence, overflow incontinence, functional incontinence and total incontinence.
The urge incontinence happens due to loss of bladder control because of weak muscles. In this condition, the sudden urge to urinate is overwhelming and when you are unable to reach the bathroom in time, you end up wetting the dress. It all starts with overactive bladder wherein you have the need to urinate too often. When muscles around the urethra in women contract suddenly there is sudden urge to urinate and the leakage occurs.
Stress incontinence is the condition when small amount of leakage occurs when you suddenly sneeze or laugh or exert yourself. The muscles surrounding the urethra becomes weak and can not withstand stress and opens up leading to accidental leakage.
Overflow Incontinence occurs when small amounts of urine leak from the bladder which is always full. Men can have overflow incontinence because they are unable to empty the bladder fully due to enlarged prostate and when the bladder becomes full again, leakage occurs. Injury to the spinal chord and diabetes can also cause this type of urinary incontinence.
Functional Incontinence is generally experienced by older people who have normal bladder control but unable to reach the bathroom in time due to other ailments such as arthritis which cause movement difficulties hence the leakage.
Total incontinence is rare in which the bladder muscles become totally dysfunctional. In this condition the patient loses all control over these muscles and needs continuous care for the disposal of urine. This can be done by using external devices to collect and dispose urine.
Urinary incontinence unfortunately has stigma attached to it making people hide the condition to avoid embarrassment. Some of these people isolate themselves and fore go social interaction due to the fear of accidental exposure. This leads to depression which aggravates the problem further.
Incontinence is an ailment like any other that can be treated and cured. This should not be looked upon as a disgraceful condition and you must seek medical help to correct this problem . There are many who have been successfully cured of this problem and you also may join their ranks by taking suitable medical help.
